New highs vs new lows chart

The difference is that in the S&P 500 Index New Highs/Lows chart you may see just the number of the S&P 500 Index stocks which hit their 52 weeks Highs and their 52-week Lows, on the other hand High Low range chart you may see the number of the S&P 500 Index stocks traded in a specified range from their 52 weeks Highs and their 52-week Lows. The daily number of New Highs and New Lows (NHNL) refers to stocks reaching their highest or lowest price during the most recent 52-week period. Below is a NHNL chart for the stocks that compose the S&P 500 Index, and we can learn a few things from it. First, we can see that the main problem is that new highs are contracting as prices move higher.

This symbol tracks the historical number of new 1-Month Highs for that exchange. In most cases, the number listed on the Highs/Lows Summary page will match the value shown on the chart, but due to the way we update the website, the numbers may sometimes be slightly out-of-sync. Similarly, a new low occurs when the price records a 52-week low. From this high and low data, StockCharts also calculates Net New Highs, which is new highs minus new lows, and the High-Low Ratio, which is new highs divided by new lows. The New Highs-New Lows indicator ("NH-NL") displays the daily difference between the number of stocks reaching new 52-week highs and the number of stocks reaching new 52-week lows. Interpretation You can interpret the NH-NL indicator as a divergence indicator or as an oscillator. New High/Lows Ratio = New Lows / New Highs and the New Highs/Lows PO (Percentage Oscillator) is calculated: New High/Lows PO = 100 * (New Highs - New Lows) / (New Highs + New Lows) As you may notice, in case of New Highs/Lows Ratio formula, when number of New Highs is equal zero the ratio will run into infinity - you will receive an error. The peak in New Highs usually appears before the final price high. It is also possible to create an interesting indicator by finding the daily difference between New Highs and New Lows, and summing that over time. The new highs lows ratio measures the number of securities trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) that are hitting a 52-week high or 52-week low. The indicator performs this calculation for stocks, preferred stocks, closed-end funds, and ETFs. This week's chart focuses only on the number of new highs, ignoring the numbers of new lows. Since only 1 stock made a new 52-week low on March 5, there is not much information there. Similarly, there was not much information in the miniscule numbers of new highs during late 2008. Each has its own importance at different times.
