Retail Price Index: January 2020 1. Main points In January 2020, the annual rate of infl ation as measured by the Retail Price Index (RPI) was 1.34 per cent, up from 1.18 per cent in December 2019 (Table 2). The twelve-month moving average rate for January stood at 1.63 per cent (Table 2)¹. The RPI is published by the Office for National Statistics. It measures the average change from month to month in the prices of goods and services purchased by most households in the UK. The government uses the RPI for the uprating of pensions, state benefits, tax allowances and index-linked gilts.
